To be honest, I am not really happy with this one. I quite like the right side of the painting but I had lots of difficulties with the left side. I painted that young man's face a million times, wiped it off again and again, but didn't manage to paint him as loosely as his father. Secondly I am not sure about the background. Might give it another try sometime because I do like the composition of the two men looking at each other and the waterfront....

I see what you mean, the son's face is a bit too brushed. What I think is more about the color setting. Imagine that the father would wear something dark and the son something light, ... I even think the two should swap cloths! I really like the two watching each other it give a intimacy and a nice feeling to watch them. all in one a very good effort Liza, nothing to be unhappy about.
Hi Liza,
I love the son's face. He has that self-satisfied look of youth like he knows a secret the father will never know -- when in fact the reverse might be true. This is just a gorgeous painting. Both sides of it are beautifully painted.

Wonderful Double Portrait Liza. Perhaps the stiffness with sons face is detail of right eye. Soften and obscure the white of eye, and eye to eyebrow. More in cool shadow.
The smile and pose and direction gives the rest.
The fathers face totally in shadow against light shirt against light water and sky is terrific.
Thanks a lot for your kind comment, René. You might be right about the colours - I will try that in case I attempt painting it again larger. For me it is mainly the "brushed" face on the left which I find disturbing.
Thank you, Barbara! I always like the way you perceive and then describe things so precisely! Right on!
Candy Barr, I agree! That eye is a bit odd and should be changed.
I am pleased you like the rest and thank you for leaving your kind comment!
