I never thought I would paint rats - and enjoy it! At first I hesitated for a moment, when a young girl from Canada asked me if I would do a portrait of her rats, but then... it was a challenge. In the end I thought they were even quite sweet.

It’s great to see you back in the saddle, Liza where you belong, not missing a beat! These two paintings are marvelous!
Thomas Eakins kept pet rats and the occasional mouse and so did our own Emily Carr. Then it was not considered bizarre. But in this age of science, experimentation and prevalence of rats in labs - rats get a bad rap.

I agree with Marcia. Rats actually get a bad rap because they are good at figuring out how to survive in urban environments. Rats in the upscale restaurants really upset clients spending $500 on supper. Yikes. These Canadians can clearly be very persuasive. And I'm glad. The result is a great painting.

I couldn't imagine having rats as pets either, Chris, but I guess that's a question of conditioning...

Yeah...I know rats are intelligent and they might actually be quite nice, but - not for me, sorry.

This Canadian is my youngest fan and has been for several years now, so I couldn't refuse.
But I would also be fairly upset if I saw a rat while eating a $500 dinner - apart from the fact that spending so much money for dinner would upset me in the first place. I don't think that will ever happen to me....
