Paola's Patio

Paola's Patio by Liza Hirst

Ok, I cheated a bit today in regard to plein air painting - this was painted through a window.....
It's not only the cold and the on-lookers that are obstacles for me with painting outside. There's this whole thing of having to carry the equipment you need (which sums up to quite a lot)to the spot you want to paint at and you dare not forget anything, because otherwise you have to pack it all up and carry it back again. But then, I see Peter Brown for instance, who does it all the time and in every weather!

I love hearing your about your struggles with plein air! It's so true! Weather, on lookers, bugs, forgetting something. Somehow it's always a learning experience.
Meanwhile, thank you so much for that link to George Brown! He's awesome!

Hi liza
I love this London plein air painting and through the window painting - Paola's Patio - beautiful!. And although I think your friend René is admirable for encouraging you to dig in outside – I am guessing, hoping, assuming that you will find an inside space to work.

The link to this wonderful Bath artist, Peter Brown, is showing us that he actually has the best of both worlds - because he certainly paints interior scenes in his home and studio – I think in one painting I counted as many as six children! – so when he goes outside to work on his streetscapes – that must be almost like an escape for him. But that’s an educated guess on my part and I’m also joking of course, of course!!

Hi Nancy, I am pleased you enjoy hearing about my struggles because I sometimes ask myself, if there's actually anybody out there who's interested in my personal musings.
Today the sun is shining and I will give it another go!

Hi Marcia, thanks a lot! I am looking for a studio space but as London is extremely expensive and packed with artists, there aren't many possibilities. Yet, I am optimistic (and determined) to find something eventually. I am pleased you also like Peter Brown's work - I admire it so much!I'm heading out there today - let's see how it goes...

Hi Liza,

Is there really any cheating in art. I've painted so many street scenes of my street or backyard from the comfort of my living room studio in winter, and from my porches at the front and back of the house. I love this painting. Something about it says London so clearly to me. I wish I could be there to raise a glass of Christmas cheer with you.

Hi Barbara,

Good question - is there? Well, I don't think I cheated in art but I did a bit with plein air painting - not that I am too concerned about it though. Unfortunately it has become so cold here now that I caught a cold yesterday while painting outside and that isn't worth it for me. I will try again in spring, I think.
Barbara, I would also love to raise a glass with you! Must do sometime!
