In a Bar in Barcelona

This is one of my favourite bars in Barcelona. It has a great atmosphere and the people working there are always very friendly. Unfortunately I forgot what it's called. You might notice the cigarettes the men are holding - well, that is history now. As one of the last countries in Europe to do so, from this year on Spain has now also prohibited smoking inside public places.

The faded elegance of an old patrician house in Barcelona. Walking up these stairs, I felt as if time had turned back a hundred years. The patina everywhere in the city is a feast for the painter's eye.

As far as I can remember, I have never dared to paint a sunset sky before. Most painted sunsets are simply too kitschy for me and I was afraid that would happen to mine, too - well, it has.
BUT - I like it nevertheless. Maybe just because it was so much fun painting it, enjoying all those fantastic colours and trying to capture the delicate sky behind the strong clouds.

Looking in the opposite direction from my window than the views I painted the last days, I saw this beautiful serene scene on the sea front of Barcelona.

I liked the combination of the greys at the bottom of the painting with the oranges and yellows.
And - I've found the solution for taking a photo of the finished painting. It's tricky but it works - see below:

Sun on "La Sagrada Familia"

Another picture of Barcelona in the morning sunlight, this time with Gaudi's famous "Sagrada Familia" in the background.
The photo issue is still not solved completely, but apart from a slight reflection at the bottom of the painting, it turned out fairly well today. I'm getting there!

Sunrise Barcelona

Still haven't found the ideal place for taking the photograph but it's already a bit better than before. The problem is, that the sunlight beaming through the windows is so strong that, no matter where I set up the painting, it reflects very much. So I tried out closing the curtains, but then it was too dark. Puh! The best place so far has been the hallway, which means setting up the painting and the camera on quite a slim drawer, at an angle, with the camera right on the edge, hoping it won't fall down. Well, I'll go on searching....

On our way here, we stopped over in Barcelona for a few days, where I enjoyed the view over the city, gleaming in fantastic sunrises every morning. Might paint more of those.

The Tourist

This painting looks much better in real and the colours are quite different, but as I am in the south of Spain at the moment, I haven't got my usual place and light to take a good photo of the finished painting. It seems difficult to find the ideal spot around here and so I am quite frustrated with the photos that I am posting here.
Hope, that tomorrow I am more successful!

So, this is my first daily painting in 2011 and I have to get into the swing of it again, after a few weeks of holiday and working on a difficult commission.
